Ebony

WP_20160519_20_12_30_ProI shared a passion for textiles with my Mum.I designed and she made my wedding dress nearly 25 years ago.We attended to opening of Ebony at Bellevue Arts Museum. It was great to catch up with old friends and see some amazing pieces.

My personal favorite was a plus sized evening dress with stunning hand work.Lots of pictures below.I’d highly recommend this exhibit and if you know anyone who has the facilities to host it -it’s just waiting to be shared.

Not my best image ever due to low light.Hopefully the detail shots make up for poor quality.Up close images worked much better.I loved the surfaces in this piece and am pretty sure they will work their way into some of my work.

Summer 2016 and beach adventures

Yes it has arrived and around me it has been a beautiful spring. I’ve been making memories with a family visit. My parents have been on vacation meaning lots of personal time and no blogging.I have lots of snippets to share. We ventured to the coast and the mountains,To show opening and completed pieces in my own studio.I joined my first swap in a couple of years and just generally have fun and hung out.We discover a new local museum and had an unusual beach find.

WP_20160522_14_45_04_Pro (2)We visited La Push and stayed at Quileute Oceanside resort.A beautiful spot while walking the beach we found this piece below the tide line. The following morning we took the piece to the elders for identification and to be sent to the school as a teaching aid. We’re still waiting for identification. We were really curious as to what it could be.

Gentle Strolling

It’s turned cold and grey again.

It’s still worth getting outside and catching up with all the flowers in bloom and seeing the distant lakes, the mountains are hidden in shroud of clouds.I hope to post an image of a banks that overcrowded with blue flowers.I think every neighbor has a different name for them but today I saw a hummingbird feeding on this patch.I saw it buzz in as I walked along and just paused until it had it’s fill.Moments like this are just precious .I am so lucky to be able to stroll slowly and enjoy them.I miss work and a busy complex life but watching a hummingbird just makes my day.Building my own garden to support such birds feels like a valid occupation.Time to reduce the buttercups  and propagate some more of those blue flowers.

Happy Earth Day

Such a great day to celebrate.

I checked the new trees we’ve planted over the spring.Enjoyed the new blooms in the deck barrel.I’m working on some recycled cuffs which I’ll share more about later if the project comes together. There foundation are recycled jeans, plastic bottles and other end of life textiles.

Pilots and Memory quilts

Well I continued to struggle with Cas Holmes technique so I sat down after a session with my student and just mixed up the paste and added coffee and with no care to the pieces I just made a collage as a pilot.I like it very much and will continue to explore this technique.WP_20160324_10_30_45_Pro (2)

I have to add I have handstitched and machine embroidered more sections which are still awaiting assembly.Keep watching I’ll get there in the end.

Ohh and the memory quilt. This is just a really personal piece. The inchie queen just needed to flex her handstitching skill. This is also a great example of (a) how to present and (b) how not present your work.WP_20160331_10_59_48_Pro

Old Connections

WP_20160322_12_39_44_ProI have been exchanging letters with my old ward sister for the last 21 years since my son was born. These letters have become important in the years since we arrived in the US.Since I no longer work formally , just volunteer ,I miss professional contact .In her last letter she asked how I’d supported the young folks at the Artful evening evening.I had a few left over supplies that could be adapted to a flat pack card for mailing to the UK.So this card will be winging it’s way back to Oxford.

Retrospective

WP_20160314_11_00_10_ProBack in the day I did a lot of cross-stitch.Back in the day I taught health and social care a bit.

One of my ex-pupil posted this quote recently. She has done very well in the world and continues to impress and surprise me. It’s deliberately irregular and the penguin were a request.

Have to big up Pinterest for this project. The text creator and penguin were sourced there.Little technical point I brought a square frame locally but found it really uncomfortable and difficult to tension for this project.I swapped back to an old wooden ring and was much more comfortable and able to tension the work better.

It needs trimming, washing, pressing and sending to the UK.

Art Books as Inspiration

Hilltop1I’m still working from Cas Holmes Stitching Stories book and her wonderful article and this months Cloth,Scissors and Paper.Suddenly I realised it’s March and I have finally gathered the required supplies well almost I’m still having issues finding the correct adhesive. So instead of starting I’ve put my draft to one side will try a pilot book with will be part one of two.

My stitch story focuses on my weekly walk around Hilltop.I try to make this about 1 trip every week.It means on a clear day I get to see two volcanos. Mount Baker my daily companion and Mt Rainier the volcano that dominated the Seattle skyline plus the Olympic Mountains. There are also Lake Washington the Cascades and the Spaceneedle. It truly as a top of the world trip.

Women and Creativity ATC’s

Among a beach day and family Sunday I put together a set of ATC’s this weekend for the women and creativity ATC exchange. They are still looking for artists to trade so if you up to it try and make a few ATC’s and join in.I did a green acrylic wash a little gold spray. For me this speaks to the evergreen state in which I live. The trees are hand carved in foam and printed on pages of my reused journal.I washed it with coffee and iridescent copper then printed with hybrid ink-from a vendor at Urban Craft Uprising.

WP_20160219_16_32_08_ProThen I tried an owl landing on the tree but in the end settled for a watercolor metallic dragonfly. They were completed by a gold border.A little fantasy as we don’t see dragonflies and bare tree together but they are the memory of the summer to come.

I have know idea where these little pieces of art will end up but I hope the bring a smile to someone’s day somewhere.

Arboretum Fun and a Prize

WP_20160215_07_45_43_ProThe annual garden build for the arboretum was fun.Old faces new plants and a bit of a challenge with the lighting set up but all came together to produce an award winning garden.

This is an early set up image upon my arrival on Monday morning.Winning images are available on the Arboretum Foundation Facebook page.

Most of the plants will be for sale at the arboretum post show sale so on Monday I’ll be helping to repot, remove and take the space back to it’s convention center origin oh and remove some of that moss !
